Haitian Children: Main Victims of the Quake

Port-au-Prince, Jan 12. -As they play among the rubble of buildings destroyed by the earthquake or near the sewage, thousands of Haitian children seem to have forgotten the tragedy they lived two years ago.On Thursday, the day before the second anniversary of that fatal day, children are the main victims of the quake and still suffer the lack of progress two years later. Some hundreds of them still do not know what it is like to have a home, given that since they were born they live in camps, where their parents live along with over 500,000 people.

A large number of them lost their entire family in the quake and currently live with neighbors or in charity institutions, while others were adopted through shady mechanisms or forced to work as servants or prostitutes.

The Unicef denounced last Monday that although some improvements have been made, over four million Haitians have limited options for their survival, development and protection.

The situation of Haitian children is still worrying, the UN agency noted. Over 45 percent of the Haitian population suffers from food insecurity, according to official figures, while a large part of the victims are children. (Prensa Latina)
