UN Expert: There is No World Without Renewable Energy

Asuncion, Mar 31. -Certainty that the future of humanity will be sustained by renewable energy is driving the actions of the United Nations Development Program's sustainable energy department.

If that path is not taken, the world will come to an end, said Diego Masera, head of that department.

The Vienna-based Argentine expert Vienna said the use of renewable energy is an essential component in reducing the concentration of carbon dioxide (CO2) in the atmosphere.

Masera travelled to Asuncion to attend the 2nd Technical Meeting of the Renewable Energy Observatory for Latin America and the Caribbean, with participants from 12 countries of the region plus China, India and Spain as guests.

Regarding UN actions to continue raising awareness, he revealed that 2012 will be the International Year of Sustainable Energy for All.

That initiative is to get governments to commit to ensuring that in the next 20 years all people will have access to modern forms of energy.

In this respect he said a special fund will be raised for projects and the co-financing of actions by governments and the private sector. (Prensa Latina)
