Former Interior Minister Returned to Bolivia for Trial

Former Interior Minister Returned to Bolivia for Trial La Paz, Sep. 2. -Bolivian authorities brought back Interior Minister Guillermo Fortun into the country on Friday in order to try him for various crimes.

The former Bolivian minister (1997-2001) was transferred from Peru aboard a Bolivian Armed Forces airplane and will face charges on the misappropriation of funds, corruption, and criminal association.

Peruvian police handed Fortun over to Bolivian officials at a military air base near Callao international terminal a week after he was detained in Lima while attempting to travel abroad.

A resolution of the Peruvian Ministry of the Interior said that the decision to expel the former Bolivian minister was a result of actions in violation of that states security by entering Peru despite an international arrest warrant.

According to the Peruvian Ministry of Interior, the presence of Fortun in that territory was bringing about uneasiness, and affecting bilateral relations with Bolivia. (Prensa Latina)
