Iceland Volcano Affects Scotland, Threatens North Europe

Iceland Volcano Affects Scotland, Threatens North EuropeLondon, May 25. -Volcanic ash from the Grimsvotn volcano generated chaos in airports in Scotland, preventing thousands of passengers from traveling, and the cloud of ash threatened to paralyze air traffic in northern Europe.

Some 200 to 250 flights were cancelled and around 500 flights were expected to be disrupted in Northern Ireland and the Scandinavian region, said Brian Flynn, head of operations at the regional air safety agency Eurocontrol.

By late Tuesday, the cloud of ash from the most active volcano in Iceland could reach southern Scandinavia, Denmark and part of northern Germany, Flynn stated.

Without specifying when, the official added that the ashes would reach France and then Spain.

The Grimsvotn volcano, whose largest eruption in a century and a half began last Saturday, is located on the Vatnajokull glacier in southeast Iceland. (Prensa Latina)
