Cuba Wins World University Baseball Championship in Japan

Tokyo, Aug 7. – A homer by Alfredo Despaigne with two men on base gave Cuba a 4-3 victory over the United States in the final of the World University Baseball Championship on Saturday.

At the end of the 10th inning, the left field player, named MVP in the recent Cuba championship, hit the ball through center field to overturn an unfavorable 1-3 marker.

Despaigne was the big man; he brought in four runs, having tied the game one-one in the 8th inning with his third homer of the tournament.

From the box, Miguel Alfredo Gonzalez did an excellent job, striking out 14 players during nine and two-thirds innings and shining at various moments, despite allowing a homer.

However, the victory went to Vladimir García, who made only one pitch to achieve the final out of the US team.(Prensa Latina)
