UK Refuses Granting Safe Conduct to Assange

UK Refuses Granting Safe Conduct to AssangeLondon, Aug 20.- The United Kingdom refused today granting a safe-conduct for the founder of the alternative site Wikileaks, Julian Assange, to leave the country, because of the political asylum granted by Ecuador.

Under our law, we are obliged to extradite him to Sweden. We intend to comply with that obligation, a spokesman from Prime Minister David Cameron stated in a release.

Downing Street also said that this country will continue discussions with the Ecuadorian government to reach a diplomatic solution to the case of the founder of Wikileaks.

Given asylum since June 19 at the Ecuadorian embassy in London, following his detention in December 2010 by the British police, Assange opposes the transfer to the Nordic nation for alleged sex crimes, charges the Australian journalist has rejected.

After an 18-month trial that concluded in May, the British Supreme Court dismissed the arguments against his extradition, so after exhausting all legal channels, Assange took refuge at the Ecuadorian embassy.

On Thursday, August 16, before London's rejection, Ecuador granted political asylum to Assange, stating that his life is in danger if he is extradited to Sweden, because of the threat of a later deportation to the United States, where there is no guarantee of a fair trial for the founder of Wikileaks, as Quito states.
