Cuba Thrashes Iran in Volleyball World Cup
Tokyo, Nov 21. -The Cuba volleyball team on Monday defeated Iran in the 2011 FIVB Men's World Cup and attained its first victory in the competition, which will give just three qualifying slots for the 2012 Olympic Games of London.In a morning match, the Cuban players swept Iranians by 25-17, 25-17 and 25-22 in group A of the competition corresponding to the second date, where Fernando Hernandez and Wilfredo Leon starred, scoring 20 and 18 points, respectively.
The Cuban team was defeated 0-3 by Poland in the opening match of the tournament, which ends on December 4. In the first outing, the Iranians swept the hosts.
Meanwhile, Italy also swept Egypt (25-22, 25-15 and 25-20) while recovering from the setback suffered in four sets yesterday before Russia.
On the current date, the competition also includes matches between Serbia-Poland and Argentina-Japan, in Nagoya, home of the competition group A, while in the B group, in Kagoshima, the United States-Brazil and Russia-China matches will be played.
The tourney includes four rounds, the second in Osaka and Kumamoto and the third in Fukuoka and Hamamatsu. The final stage will be held in this capital, with three days of competitions. (Prensa Latina)
