Cuba Denies Version on Reelection of Ban Ki-moon

United Nations, Jun 17. -Cuba denied reports blaming it for preventing the Group of Latin America and the Caribbean (GRULAC) from supporting the re-election of Ban Ki-moon as UN secretary general.

The refutation of those rumors, spread by the news agency Reuters, was issued in a press release from the Cuban permanent mission to the UN.

The press release "categorically rejects that allegation, especially when the aforementioned group has not met today (June 16)."

"On a previous occasion when the GRULAC examined this issue, Cuba was not among the countries that informed they did not have instructions to support the secretary general, nor has it opposed that re-election," the note said.

The text proposes that Reuters reveal the identity of its source, described by that news agency as "a Western diplomat."

On Thursday, the UN Security Council announced that on Friday, it would recommend to the General Assembly the election of the current UN secretary general for a second five-year term.

With no other candidate for the post, Ban Ki-moon announced 10 days ago his desire to continue as UN secretary general for a second term starting next January 1st. (Prensa Latina)
