Cuban Rat Pesticide Used in 22 Nations

Cienfuegos, Sep 12. -Biorat, a biological rodenticide, is being successfully used in 22 nations in Africa, Latin America and Europe.

Produced by the Cuban pharmaceutical company LABIOFAM, it is the only biological product marketed worldwide, the National News Agency (AIN) reported.

Matanzas, Habana and Cienfuegos provinces are where the formula is processed, made up of unhulled rice to obtain an organic bait, although corn and rice grains are also being used experimentally.

Because of its quality and results, this Cuban formula replaces chemical products previously imported by the country for domestic use, and is exported to other areas of the world affected by an overpopulation of rats.

Yaraimi Ortiz Reyez, LABIOFAM quality and development director in Cienfuegos, told AIN that the Biorat's active ingredient is Salmonella enteritidis, with virulence and highly effective against rats and mice.(Prensa Latina)
