School for Children with Disabilities to Open in Central Cuba

Santa Clara, Cuba, Apr 19.-The Marta Abreu School for children with physical and motor disabilities will be opened in Santa Clara, after a process of total remodeling.

The school center joins those already open in Havana and Santiago de Cuba with similar characteristics.

It will provide rehabilitation for disabled infants with disabilities in Camagüey, Ciego de Avila, Sancti Spiritus, Villa Clara and Cienfuegos.

Principal of the school, Xiomara Perdomo, told Prensa Latina this Thursday that when the center is at full capacity it will house 120 children, each with a companion, who will support the rehabilitation process.

Perdomo informed the school will be officially opened next week, but a large group of children are already in the facility.

The students in a first stage will receive pedagogical teaching from the kindergarten to the secondary level.

The Minister of Education, Ena Elsa Velazquez, recently visited the center, and was interested in the training of the staff that will teach boarding and and semi-boarding students.

The Minister visited the places, its outdoors, its classrooms and areas where the children will receive special attention for their physical and psychological rehabilitation, and the subsequent incorporation into society.

Contractor Jose Basilio Novaez stressed, for his part, that a total remodeling was carried out, which included aluminum carpentry, roofing, elimination of architectural barriers and electrical and plumbing installations.

The general cost of the work exceeds 6,400 000 million Cuban pesos, built with the greatest care by the builders, with a view to build a beautiful school to allow a healthy and happy rehabilitation to these infants protected by the Revolution. (Prensa Latina)
