Cuba to publish new national atlas

Havana, Cuba, Sep 9.- Cuba will publish a new National Atlas with a cartographic work appropriate to current conditions, being the first of its kind fully created by experts in the country.

Thirty years after its first version, the “National Atlas of Cuba LX Anniversary”, created by the Institute of Tropical Geography in honor of the triumph of the Cuban Revolution, is also designed to be used in multimedia, the Cuban Science Network publishes.

The Atlas has been designed in seven thematic sections: General and Reference Maps, Nature, Population, Economy, Strategic Matters, History and Culture, with 200 maps, and aims to have a “living atlas” thanks to its rapid, systematic and economic updating.

The main goal is to provide an online service of the National Atlas of Cuba to be used on the web as well as mobile devices.

This work is still a challenge, because although its digital processing can reduce the high costs required by traditional technology, the implementation of the needed digital content has not been applied before in Cuba, “which forces us to learn by doing”. Jose Miguel Basulto, one of the project experts said. (ACN)
