Dissatisfaction with Cancun Summit Agreements

Mexico City, Dec 13. -Mexico City Mayor Marcelo Ebrard said the agreements reached at the Cancun Climate Summit are a repeat of Copenhagen, which was rated as a complete failure.

Some progress was reached in Cancun, but in general, it failed to achieve its goal, Ebrard said during a lecture in Acapulco.

During the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP-16), which concluded in Cancun on Sunday, the rich countries did not commit to reducing greenhouse gases, which was the top demand of States most hit by global warming, Ebrard criticized.

Referring to the agreement to reduce carbon emissions by 2020, he said "it is far from what is needed, and the 100 million dollars to be invested is nothing."

Mexico City will allocate its own resources to cut daily emissions of pollutant gases by 14 percent, beginning in 2011. However, the United States did not even commit to reducing pollution by at least three percent, Ebrard added.

"We will cut emissions as soon as possible, because we have realized that no progress is reached when dealing with general agreements at the level of national governments," he said. (Prensa Latina)
