CELAC Demands Total Elimination of Nuclear Weapons

HAVANA, Cuba, Aug 22. -The Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC) adopted a declaration in Buenos Aires, which favors nuclear disarmament. The text is considered crucial for its content according to a report by Radio Havana Cuba.

The text, which considers complete and verifiable nuclear disarmament as the highest priority, insists that the only guarantee against the use or threat to use nuclear weapons is their complete elimination. It also reiterates that the use or threat to use nuclear weapons is a crime against humanity and a violation of international law.

In that sense, the CELAC declaration demands States that possess such weapons to provide legally binding and unambiguous guarantees that they would not use nor threaten to use them in their doctrines, security policies and military strategies as an approach to resolving conflicts.

The declaration of the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States will be presented at a high-level meeting of the UN General Assembly on September 26th.(acn)
