Egyptians Demonstrate, Demand Swifter Change
Cairo, Jul 8. -Five months after the uprising that overthrew Hosni Mubarak, Egyptians took over Tahrir Square on Friday to vindicate national pride with a mass demonstration to demand a speedier democratic transition.
The "Friday of Persistence" mobilization actually began much earlier, judging by the chants, flags and banners that filled Cairo's emblematic square, as witnessed by Prensa Latina.
A mix of frustration, deception and, paradoxically, persistent hope to change things, were the common denominators in the faces and comments of the majority of demonstrators, no matter their religion, political affiliation, age, social status or sex.
What cabdriver Abdul affirmed would be "the second revolution," backed by the Muslim Brotherhood, seemed sure to result in a new occupation of Tahrir Square, complete with tents, until "our demands are met".
"The people want the overthrow of the regime," demonstrators shouted, displaying insastisfaction of many groups who believe that few or none of their goals have been materialized by the government, including the prosecution of former officials of the Mubarak government. (Prensa Latina)
