Stockholm, June 11 .-Cuban Juan Miguel Echevarría achieved the 5th best record in the history of the long jump by posting an impressive 8.83 meters jump at the Diamond League in Stockholm.
By doing such deed the Caribbean jumper of only 19 years also stamped a Cuban national record, which formerly had the Olympic champion of Sydney 2000 Ivan Pedroso, author of a record of 8.70 m at the World Cup in Gothenburg, in Sweden, in 1995.
The jump of the Cuban, with a wind in favor of 2.1 meters per second in his last attempt, stayed at 12 centimeters of the universal height of 8.95 m implanted by the American Mike Powell in 1991.
He also has 8.90m ahead of the American Bob Beamon in 1968, 8.87m of the legendary Carl Lewis on the same day as Powell in Tokyo, and 8.86m of Robert Emmiyan for the then Soviet Union in 1987.
With his extraordinary performance, Echevarría overshadowed the American Jeff Henderson and his main rival of the season, the South African Luvo Manyonga, second and third, with jumps of 8.39 m and 8.25 m, respectively.
In the same competition the Cuban had achieved in his third attempt an 8.50 m that would have also been valid for the first place.
