The report, which supports a draft resolution submitted by Cuba to the United Nations General Assembly on the need to end the blockade, recalls that the accumulated damage for almost 60 years amounts to 933.678 billion dollars, taking into consideration the depreciation of the US dollar against the value of gold in the international market.
At current prices, the blockade’s damage can be estimated at more than 134.499,800 billion dollars, the text stressed.
According to Cuban authorities, the US Government imposed a serious setback to relations with Cuba after the signing by President Donald Trump in June 2017 of a ‘Presidential National Security Memorandum on the Strengthening of Politics from the US to Cuba.’
That document establishes, among its objectives, the tightening of the blockade.
Five months later, the US departments of Commerce, Treasury and State issued new regulations and provisions to comply with the aforementioned memorandum.
The measures further restricted US citizens’ right to travel to Cuba and imposed additional obstacles to the limited opportunities for US business people in Cuba.
These new sanctions on Cuba caused a significant decrease in visits from the United States and further hindered economic and commercial relations between Cuban companies and potential US and third-country partners.
For Cuba, that US policy is a mass, flagrant and systematic violation of the human rights of all people and an act of genocide, according to the Convention for the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide of 1948.
Cuba also considers it a violation of the United Nations Charter and International Law, and an obstacle to international cooperation. (Prensa Latina)
