Buenos Aires, Jan 4. -Argentinean President Cristina Fernandez underwent surgery on Wednesday against thyroid cancer, a procedure that doctors described as successful.According to a statement from the presidency, "the operation was performed without any problem or complication."Fernandez underwent surgery at the Austral hospital, located in the city of Pilar (22 miles north of Buenos Aires).

The presidential spokesman, Alfredo Scoccimarro, who read the text, added that Fernandez is going through "a good postoperative recovery."

Fernandez will remain in hospital for about 72 hours, says the statement.

The next medical report will be released Thursday at noon, concludes the note.
