Cuba Announces Friendly Dual Meet with Puerto Rican Team

Havana, Sept 9. -The Cuban national baseball pre-team will dispute five friendly matches for a dual meet against Puerto Rico, as assured by Cuban Baseball Federation president Higinio Velez here Thursday. Higinio Velez said the dual meet will take place at the Latinoamericano Stadium in Havana, from Sept 14 to 19 in the evenings, with the exception of Sunday.

The 38 Cuban selected players will take part in the matches, said Velez before he reasserted the excellent shape of all the Cuban players wanting to form the national team, starting their sixth macro-cycle of their training, for the World Championship in Panama.

Cuba was placed in Group B to compete at the World Baseball Cup, scheduled from October 1 to 15 in Panama, together with Australia, South Korea, Venezuela, Nicaragua, Dominican Republic, Italy and Germany.

Group B will include the teams of USA (defending champion), Puerto Rico, Chinese Taipei, Japan, Canada, Greece, Holland and Panama (host).

Cuba will compete under the leadership of manager Alfonso Urquiola, to win the world title in the hands of the US since 2007.

In total, Cuba shows 25 champion trophies, being the maximum winner of world titles.

The World Baseball Championships had their first edition in the United Kingdom in 1938, an edition in which the host country was the winner, with the participation of only two countries. (Prensa Latina)
