Combine Machines Cut Most Sugarcane in Cuba

Havana, Dec 12. -More than 90 percent of the cane used in Cuban sugar mills is harvested nowadays using modern machines, reported a source of the business group Azcuba.The rest of the harvest is done by cane cutters, said the vice president of this entity, Jose C. Santos, who added that more than 10,000 farm machinery, motors and rail transport, among others, will participate in this process during the current season. According to Santos, around 30,000 workers will also participate.

In a recent appearance on a television program, the Azcuba vice president said that the main objective of the harvest is to ensure the quanity of the cane required for stable quality production.

It is also necessary to provide to the sugar factory raw materials of better quality and frshness, which depends on the harvesting technology and on ensuring that it reaches the factory within eight hours.

Around five mills in three provinces are already cutting and grinding cane in the current harvest, and at the end of the month around 20 mills will be operating, said a source of the group to Prensa Latina.

Forty-six mills will participate in the harvesting, seven more than in the previous season, and they hope to produce 20 percent more sugar. (Prensa Latina)
