Washington, June 25. -More than one million people, mostly youth, are involved in gangs in the USA, according to the Department of Justice.
The members of these groups increased from 800,000 in 2005 to over one million in 2008, federal reports show.
Conservative estimates show that some 900,000 are active and more than 145,000 are imprisoned for their activities.
In cities like New York, where in 2009 there were about 20,000 members of these groups, and Los Angeles, the proliferation of gangs has become a headache for the authorities.
Los Angeles, California, is considered the capital of these groups in the country. In this city there are frequent shootings and clashes over control of areas, drug trade and sometimes even for unknown reasons. (Prensa Latina)
