Caricature Exhibit for Cuban Five to Open in Egypt
Cairo, Jun 21. -The Egyptian affiliate of the Federation of Caricaturist Organizations (FECO-Egypt) convened an international exhibition to express solidarity with five antiterrorist Cuban fighters unfairly held in U.S. prisons for nearly 13 years.
In a meeting with Cuba's Ambassador in Cairo Otto Vaillant, the President of FECO-Egypt Esmail Mohamed Effat invited his counterparts in Egypt and other countries to contribute caricatures in A4 format for the exhibit, to open in gallery Toot, in Cairo, on October 16, coinciding with the anniversary of the death in combat of guerrilla fighter Ernesto Che Guevara and Cuban Culture Day.
Gallery Toot has been the venue of numerous Latin American-related cultural events.
Vaillant announced the possibility that the exhibition includes works by Gerardo Hernandez, one of the Cuban patriots condemned to harsh, unjust prison terms for fighting against terrorism.
Hernandez, as well as Fernando Gonzalez, Antonio Guerrero, Ramon Labañino and Rene Gonzalez, known as The Cuban Five, are the center of a world mobilization to demand their release, and the gesture of the Egyptian caricaturists is a contribution to their cause, said the Cuban diplomat.
Effat said that the works must be presented before the Muslim month of Ramadan (almost all August this year), and indicated his intention to visit the Cuban regions of San Antonio de los Baños and the Isle of Youth for workshops and similar exhibitions. (Prensa Latina)
