[:es]US Blockade on Cuba is Unfair, Timorese Nobel Prize Winner Says[:]

[:es]Havana, Nov 3.- Nobel Peace Prize winner of Timor-Leste, Jose Ramos-Horta, has described as unjust the economic, commercial and financial blockade imposed by the United States on Cuba more than 50 years ago and it is intensified today.

In a message released here by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the former president of Timor-Leste appealed for the end of that policy against the Caribbean nation for being a consequence of the Cold War era, so it has no justification to apply it in the 21st century, he said.

Cuba has never been and is not a threat to any country, much less its powerful northern neighbor, Ramos-Horta said.

I believe that the United States and the Caribbean nation could develop an active collaboration strategy in the fight against extreme poverty in the world and against the phenomenon of international terrorism, the Nobel Prize winner said.

Despite the economic blockade and Cuba being a Third World country, it greatly contributed to a large extent to dignity, freedom and the social development of the entire planet, he said.

Since its independence in 2002, Timor-Leste has consistently supported the resolution of the UN General Assembly that condemns the U.S. blockade on the Caribbean country.

The message by the Nobel Peace Prize winner of Timor-Leste was released after the vote held this Wednesday at the United Nations General Assembly of the draft resolution entitled ‘Necessity to end the economic, commercial and financial blockade imposed by the United States of America against Cuba’.

The result -which was already expected- was 191 votes in favor, two against (United States and Israel) and no abstention. (PL)[:]
