Women Live Longer Thanks to their Genes

Washington, Sep 30. -Women are stronger than men, they get sick less and therefore live longer, this thanks to their genes, says a study published in the journal BioEssays.They have two X chromosomes, which seems to be the key to greater immunity. Although in the one hand it gives them survival advantage on the other promotes susceptibility to autoimmune disease later in life, highlights the research conducted by Belgian specialists .

The immunity of women improves their resistance to infection with a stronger response of the immune system, but later, it can result in a severe inflammatory response, say the authors of the study from University of Ghent in Belgium.

Statistics show that in humans, as in other mammals, females can live longer and better combat episodes of sepsis, infection or trauma, said Dr. Claude Libertm, a member of the study group.

We believe this is due to the X chromosome, and a few small strands of RNA that are found there.

Experts believe that even though many questions remain unresolved, the finding may be of interest in the design of new drugs. (Prensa Latina)
