World Boxing: Cuba Takes Three Fighters to Finals

Baku, Oct 8. -Cuba took three of its fighters in the finals of their respective divisions corresponding to the 16th World Boxing Championship Friday.As much Lazaro Alvarez (56 kilograms) as Yasniel Toledo (60) and Julio Cesar La Cruz (81) won their respective semifinal matches and ensured their silver medals.

The most noticeable victory was the one by La Cruz, who beat current World Champion Egor Mekhontsev (Russia) 21-15.

Lazaro Alvarez beat Anvar Yunusov (Tadzhikistan) 18-13 and Toledo to Gani Zhailauov (Kazakhstan) by registering the best performances in their boxing careers.

The other finalist in the 56 kg division is English Luke Campbell, while Toledo will fight against Ukrainian Vasyl Lomachenko, now World Champion and chosen the Best Fighter in the previous World Championship edition.

Julio Cesar La Cruz will fight against Adilbek Niyazymbetov (Kazakhstan) in the finals.

The winners on the Cuban representatives in the 52, 91 and over 91 kg also won their respective matches and this gave Cuba another three tickets for the 2012 Olympic Games.

Latin America will have another finalist with Brazilian Everton Lopes, winner 16-7 over Italian Vincenzo Mangiacapre and disputing the gold medal against Ukrainian Denys Berinchyk.

Ahead Cuba, only Ukraine is taking five fighters, while Azerbaijan and Kazakhstan are taking two each. (Prensa Latina)
