Chileans to Hold Plebiscite on Education
Santiago de Chile, Oct 3. -The Social Movement for Free and Public Education will continue another important week while holding a national plebiscite from Oct. 7-8, called by several social organizations.The referendum seeks to show the government a majority request on deep structural changes in the education system, said Jaime Gajardo, president of the Teachers's Association.
According to Gajardo, the referendum will include four questions for people older than 14 years, who will answer them at schools, social institutions, public health care centers, squares and public promenades, and also will have the opportunity to vote on line by the votociudadano.cl. website.
Free education in the country is perfectly viable and, according to opinion polls, is requested by most of the people which will be ratified by the plebiscite outcomes, Gajardo said.
The call on a referendum was also joined by the Central Union of Workers, National Confederation of Municipal Health Workers, high school students organizations, Coordinating Committee of Parents and Guardians, and the Movement for Consultation and Citizensâ�Ö Rights, among others. (Prensa Latina)
