Latin America Mobilizes in Solidarity with Chilean Students

Santiago de Chile, Sep 8. -Social organizations in various Latin American countries will demonstrate Thursday in solidarity with the social movement defending public education in Chile. The expressions of solidarity are taking place in El Salvador, Costa Rica, Colombia, Peru, Ecuador, Argentina, Paraguay, and Uruguay, according to the Association of Chilean Professors.

The different initiatives, which include sending letters to Chilean embassies in Latin America, were organized by the Latin American office of the Education International, a global union federation of teachers and education workers.

According to the Education International, education workers' unions from other Latin American countries plan to carry out similar actions next week to support Chile's anti-neoliberal movement.

"Latin America is mobilizing against a model for education that other countries are also trying to impose. We look at Chile knowing that a battle is being waged for education as a social right in the entire region," the organization said in a statement.

Meanwhile, Chilean student federations are preparing to resume mobilizations today against profiteering in education, following an apparent truce after the government offered to talk. (Prensa Latina)
