Camagüey Boasts its Breakthroughs in Preventing and Treating Genetic Diseases

Camagüey, medical genetics, Cuba, alpha-fetoprotein tests, Down Syndrome, sickle cell trait, molecular biologyCamagüey, Cuba, Aug 19. – The Provincial Centre for Medical Genetics in Camagüey province shows off favourable results following the implementation of several pre and post-natal programmes which focus on increasing the expectancy and quality of life of people. Detecting congenital malformations after taking the alpha-fetoprotein tests, the diagnostic ultrasounds and the metabolic defects inquiry are some of the main lines of work of this Camagüey-based scientific centre.

Other illnesses of genetic origin as the Down Syndrome and the sickle cell trait can be diagnosed effectively owning to the priority and support given by the center to these researches.

For successfully reaching such purpose, the hub relies on biochemical genetics, molecular biology and immunology labs among others.

The professional training of the staff who will identify the risks in the communities and provide the information on pathologies caused by hereditary flaws and the means of preventing and treating them are a complement of this welfare and scientific programme.
