Cuba Consolidates Leadership at Int”l Weightlifting Event

Cardenas, Matanzas, Mar 18. -The Cuban national weightlifting team has consolidated its leadership at the 30th International Manuel Suarez Memorial Weightlifting Tournament, after the third day of competition.

The best Cuban weightlifter and world champion runner-up in jerk, Yoelmis Hernandez, won three gold medals in the 85-kilogram division, totalling 350 kilograms (150 clean and 200 jerk), followed by fellow Cuban Yadier Nuñez, 330 (145-185), who beat his personal best.

The rules for this competition do not allow awarding two members of the same team if athletes from three or more countries are competing, so the silver went to Chilean Jorge Igor, 304 (137-167) and the bronze to Dominican Evaristo Gonzalez, 300 (135-165).

In the 63-kilogram division of the women's competition, Mexican Patricia Dominguez won the gold in jerk and total, 200 (90-110), while Cuban Dianelis Salazar was placed fifth with 161 (64-92). (Prensa Latina)
