Havana, Jun 27 .- US Victoria Burgess began today a more-than-90-mile paddleboard journey separating Marina Hemingway Yacht Club, in the west of Havana, to Key West. During the strenuous tour, planed for about 25 hours, the athlete will be accompanied by a support boat and a team for nutrition and safety.

Burges’ main objectives are to be the first woman to perform such a feat and be an ambassador of peace and friendship between the peoples of Cuba and the United States.

The 33-year-old American has experience in many sports such as basketball, volleyball and water polo.

She has also participated in famous distant paddleboard races, such as that in Molokai to Oahu, and Maui to Molokai.

In August 2013, her compatriot Benjamin Friberg won that same test after 28 hours of paddling, standing, on a surfboard, an unprecedented event until then.

The crossing of the Straits of Florida, starting from Cuba, has been a challenge for several athletes of the world, especially the United States, and in different modalities that go from swimming with or without a cage against sharks to surfing.(Prensa Latina)
