Over a Hundred Foreign Healthcare Professionals to Graduate in Camagüey

Camagüey, Jul 19.- Juan Rivadeneira, originally from Ecuador, is one out of the 160 foreign students that will receive their diplomas tomorrow in the Carlos J. Finlay Med School of Camagüey province.

The young doctor told ACN Cuban news agency he was very proud of having received his education in Cuba, and he voiced he was sure of applying what he had learned in this island nation during his social work and in his further job placement, in an Ecuadorian state’s hospital.

Since the late 1990s, when the Latin American School of Medicine (ELAM) was founded, some 10 thousand young people have graduated in different university centers countrywide, in the pursuit of increasing medical and health care in these nations.    

José Ricardo Lovelle Saldañas, Head of International Relations and Interns from Abroad declared that the students come from more than 40 countries, mostly Latin American, and receive an appropriate attention within the teaching-learning process and university extension.

For the first time, students of the New Training Program in Cuba for Doctors coming from Latin America – an initiative of Commander-in-Chief Fidel Castro to get doctors to work in poor communities of the region – will receive their diplomas in Camagüey.

The foreign students receive an academic, research and healthcare training that in their countries would be insanely expensive, and to which many of them would not have access due to their humble origin.

The General Vice-Rector of the Camagüey-based Med School, Rolando Sánchez Martínez informed that over 1,700 new Cuban and foreign dental surgeons, nurses, healthcare technologists and psychologists will graduate this school year, along with 532 medical doctors. ( Cadena Agramonte).
