Venezuelan Assembly Celebrates Independence BicentennialCaracas, Jul 8. -The National Assembly will celebrate the Independence Bicentennial on Friday with an official ceremony.The ceremony is part of a series of activities for the 5th of July, which marked the 200th anniversary of the Venezuelan Declaration of Independence.

According to a press release from the Federal Legislative Palace, writer Roberto Hernandez Montoya, president of the Romulo Gallegos Center for Latin American Studies in Caracas, will be the featured speaker.

Assembly members, foreign diplomats, representatives of all branches of government, and members of the military high command and Peoples' Power will attend the ceremony.

Others include governors, mayors, officials from the government of the capital district, and other authorities and guests.

The Declaration of Independence was presented on July 8, 1811, to the executive power of that time, which ratified it with an official decree and later collected signatures throughout the country.

National celebrations include the re-inauguration of public squares, historic buildings and restored boulevards as a result of joint work by the Libertador City Council and the capital district government.

Exhibitions of handicrafts and paintings, book sales, gastronomy fairs and cultural exchanges are some of the activities scheduled for the rest of July. (Prensa Latina)
