Coral reef in southern central Cuba deemed prosperous

Sancti Spíritus, Cuba, Dec 12.- Specialists from the Center for Environmental Services of the central province of Sancti Spíritus, today describe as prosperous the state of the coral reef located south of the city of Trinidad.

According to experts in that ecosystem, where diving activities are conducted by the Marlin Marina, biodiversity and wealth comparable to that existing in the protected area of ??Jardines de la Reina, south of Ciego de Ávila, stand out.

The study also covered the status of the ichthyofauna – a set of fish from a specific biogeographic region -with 213 species being recorded, a figure that exceeds diversity in other regions of the country.

The investigation reports that said ichthyofauna requires greater protection, given the traditional fishing exploitation of that area, by the local population, which includes the capture of young specimens, without respecting the spawning period.

The marine-coastal research centers of the University of Havana, the Marine Sciences, the coastal ecosystems of Ciego de Ávila and the Center for environmental studies of Cienfuegos also participated in the research sponsored by the Environment Agency in Cuba. (Prensa Latina)
