HAVANA, Cuba, Nov 27.- By 5 p.m. on this Sunday, November 27, over 7.3 million Cubans had gone went to the polls to elect the delegates to the municipal assemblies of the Popular Power, according to preliminary figures offered by the National Electoral Commission (CEN).

Alina Balseiro, president of the CEN, said that it results a considerable number of Cubans, 82.05 percent of the more than eight million voters summoned to exercise that citizen’s right.

Despite describing this day as complex due to the effects of the rains in municipalities in the central and eastern region, Balseiro said that the communication and transportation plans worked correctly in the different situations, and that the schedule of the news reports was respected.

According to the head of the CEN, after the closure of more than 24,000 polling stations, the authorities begin counting, packing ballots and collecting information, so that the final data correspond, with total transparency, to the results so far provided.

She announced that on Monday a press conference will be held, to bring to the people the preliminary details with the number of delegates and the quality of the voting cast.

Balseiro added that in this first stage of the 2017-2018 general elections, the unity of the people and the authorities was present, while acknowledging the value and commitment demonstrated by the Cubans.

At seven o’clock in the afternoon, the schools closed and, with the presence of neighbors, the ballot boxes were opened and the ballots counted, in accordance with the transparency and legality that characterize the Cuban electoral system. (ACN)[:]
