Fidel Castro’s Role in Cuba-CARICOM Ties Highlighted

Havana, Cuba.-The role of the historical leader of the Cuban Revolution, Fidel Castro, in strengthening the relationship between his nation and the Caribbean has been highlighted here in the context of the celebration for the Cuba-CARICOM (Caribbean Community) Day.
During a special reception held in this capital, regional diplomats stressed the legacy of the recently deceased Cuban leader to strengthen the bases of cooperation between both sides.
They also praised his sincerity and commitment with the welfare of Cuba and the region.
Four countries of that bloc that had reached their independence -Barbados, Guyana, Jamaica and Trinidad and Tobago- established diplomatic relations with Cuba on December 8, 1972. Since then, the date has marked the beginning of official ties between the two sides.
Guyana ambassador to Havana, Halim Majeed, emphasized Fidel’s role in the development of those ties and stated that the celebration of this year, has to be dedicated to the Commander-in-Chief.
The Secretary General of the Association of Caribbean States, June Soomer, stressed the role of Cuba and the historical leader of the Revolution in the Caribbean unity.
The regional integration is essential for our people, she said.
Cuban intellectual, Ricardo Alarcon, said that establishing relations with the Caribbean nation in 1972 could have a high cost.
‘ December 8 is a historic day. That day we have also reminded Comrade Fidel Castro, who without his existence, all that we are celebrating today would have been impossible’, he added.
