[:es]Cuba Reaffirms Importance and Relevance of UNESCO’s Work[:]

[:es]Paris, Nov 4.- Cuba reaffirmed the eve, in this capital the importance and relevance of UNESCO’s work in the current world, as well as its contribution to promote sustainable development.

After speaking at the General Policy Debate of the 39th General Conference of UNESCO, Cuban Minister of Science, Technology and Environment, Elba Rosa Perez, said that ‘the best tools to face the new and old challenges are in values and mandates of this organization.’

The representative of the Caribbean nation stressed that ‘as never before, humans are facing dangers and new threats that put at risk their own survival. The increasing deterioration of the environment, and the loss of diversity, raise the temperatures as a consequence of global warming and affect the natural balance of ecosystems,’ she warned.

The minister also mentioned the deepening of poverty, unemployment, migration, illiteracy, arms trafficking and human trafficking, which are aggravated as a result of the global nature of a systemic and multisectoral crisis.

‘The sustainable development would seem a difficult challenge to achieve, but it is at the same time an inalienable objective,’ she said in this context.

The minister described as a key UNESCO’s role, as ‘one of the organizations where we should continue defending education, science, culture and communications, in order to build a better world.’

During her speech, the minister also expressed Cuba’s recognition to the Director-General of UNESCO, Irina Bokova, who will finish her term in the current Conference. (cadenagramonte.cu)[:]
