India, Pakistan Resume Talks on Nuclear Weapons

Islamabad, Dec 23. -India and Pakistan will resume on Tuesday in this capital talks on nuclear and conventional weapons as part of the ongoing process of dialogue and reconstruction measures of mutual confidence.Local media highlighted that this will be the first meeting of the Joint Working Group on the subject in more than four years, although in the last few months respective foreign secretaries and other senior officials kept in contacts on the matter.

The meeting will review the control and safety measures taken by the parties in relation to their atomic and conventional weapons, including development and launch program of missiles capable of carrying nuclear warheads.

Last March, New Delhi confirmed its defensive doctrine regarding nuclear weapons, namely not to use such weapons first in case of an armed conflict with another power, while still reserving that resource in question if the enemy use chemical or biological weapons .

According to the Federation of American Scientists, Islamabad has between 70 and 90 nuclear warheads, but India is estimated in more than 100, compared to 50 or 60 themselves, which is not allowed to remain passive in front of an aggressive Pakistani nuclearization. (Prensa Latina)
