Ecuador to Propose to UNASUR Regional Measures against Measles

Quito, Oct 18. -Ecuadorian Health Minister David Chiriboga pointed out that he will submit to the Union of South American Nations (UNASUR) a proposal to eradicate measles at the regional and world levels.The proposal, which demand that all people must be vaccinated before crossing the borders, will be discussed in a meeting to be held on Wednesday in Brazil, Chiriboga said.

He told the public news agency Andes that Ecuador wants this initiative to be endorsed by the World Health Organization (WHO).

Chiriboga explained that he will hold preparatory meetings before the Board of the WHO Executive Committee in November, where he will also present Ecuador's proposal to eradicate measles.

The American continent has reported about 1,118 cases of "imported" measles, compared to 770 cases in Canada and 220 in the United States. Colombia, Peru, Argentina and recently Ecuador have also reported outbreaks of the disease, said Chiriboga. (Prensa Latina)
