Cubans in South Africa Recall Music HistoryPretoria, Aug 19 .- Cubans living in South Africa held a meeting in this capital with emphasis on the music in the national culture, coinciding with the ceremonies to pay tribute to Nelson Mandela.

Doctor in Science of Arts Xiomara Pedroso gave a speech in which she made a summary of the Cuban music history and its crucial influence in the Cuban cultural identity, with emblematic sonorities throughout the years

The young expert married to a South African citizen and living in Pretoria, spoke about the Cuban music history from the first Cuban bolero composed by Pepe Sanchez in 1885.

Pedroso made reference to extracts of songs which are symbols of the Cuban music such as Lagrimas Negras (Black Tears) and Contigo en la distancia by Cesar Portillo de la Luz.

Addressing an enthusiastic audience with the presence of Cuban ambassador in South Africa Carlos Fernandez de Cosio, the expert concluded her speech talking about the son from its beginning with Beny More, el Changui de Reve, and the formation of music bands like Juan Formell y los Van Van, Irakere , and NG la Banda.
