Cuban Hero Turns 56 away from Family and FriendsHavana, Cuba, Aug 13.- Today, August 13th Rene Gonzalez Sehwerert marks yet another birthday away from his family and friends. After 13 years of unjust imprisonment in the United States, Gonzalez is forced to remain in that country under probation regime, barred from celebrating his anniversary in the warm company of his mother and daughters.

Rene Gonzalez, one of the five Cuban anti-terrorism fighters jailed by Washington in 1998 under false espionage charges, is turning 56 years old on August 13th.

Though Rene was released form prison on October 2011, he must complete an additional three years period of probation in U.S.soil.

Gerardo Hernandez, Ramon Labanino, Antonio Guerrero, Fernando Gonzalez and Rene Gonzales, known internationally as the “Cuban Five” were jailed in September 1998 for reporting on violent schemes by far-right anti-Cuba groups based in Miami.

They were then convicted in 2001 by a Florida kangaroo court and given excessively long sentences up to life imprisonment. (Radio Cadena Agramonte).
