Ninth Edition of Literary Event Pulsates in Camagüey
Camagüey, Aug 9.- Books, guitars and the strong determination of spreading art all along the most far-off latitudes of Camagüey province feature the 9th edition of the Cruzada Literaria in Camagüey, a wide array of literary activities betting on the direct exchange between artists and audience.
In the event’s opening remarks, writer and honorary member of the Hermanos Saíz Association (AHS) Mariela Pérez-Castro affirmed that “to turn a flower into a song or verse recalling those for whom the association was named after, fellow poets, traditional singer-songwriters – all artists of the word – have rounded up for the good of art”.
During the first evening meet, visual artist and also AHS honorary member Nazario Salazar Martínez set up his personal exhibition “Del remanente fiel”. In it, the creative sides of one of the most passionate young leading-edge collaborators of this Cuban province are outlined.
Medium-sized paintings alluding to the art of building men’s ideas with the hands will be on display at the Gestos Gallery of the House of the Young Creator for several days. These paintings show reddish colors imitating clay, which suggests the vividness of ceramics – an expression also related to literature in this cultural event featuring book presentations, literary debates and book readings.
To the rhythm of trova, the attendees coming from different Cuban provinces enjoyed the music the first night in the backyard of the House of the Young Creator. On Wednesday, minstrels Iraida William from Las Tunas and Hector Luis de Posada from Ciego de Avila, along with other guest artists, were in charge of turning this literary event into a major artistic expressions’ fusion.
With the screening of the documentary Cayamba, señor trovador, the Baracoa-born researcher Rosendo Romero approached the attendees to the musical culture of the easternmost area and first village founded in Cuba that just reached the 500th anniversary of its foundation.
The magazine Antenas and the book Sombras que solo yo veo were presented in La Avellaneda Cultural Complex. The above-mentioned anthology was published by the local publishing house Acana – named after a verse by Camagüey-born National Poet Nicolás Guillén – which compiles the work of several poets from Camagüey.
The evening was tinged with recitations of decimas (form of sung poetry formally composed or improvised) and poem readings as part of the activities developed in this Cruzada Literaria, a literary event aimed at promoting culture and wide spreading the thirst for knowledge not only concerning the works of art, but also its authors.
