Guantanamo: Venue for National Rebellion Day in Cuba

Havana, Jul 26. – The mass gathering to mark Cuba's National Rebellion Day will be held today in the eastern city of Guantanamo to recall the beginning of the last stage of the Cuban Revolution that triumphed in January 1959.

The ceremony will start at 07:00 (local time) with the participation of thousands of local residents representing the inhabitants of this territory and the country in general, Granma newspaper announced.


Homage will be paid to those that participated in the July 26 military actions against the government of Fulgencio Batista (1952-1959), responsible for the death of nearly 20,000 Cubans.

The event will be broadcast live by radio and television, according to the source.

Granma newspaper explained the details of the preparations at Plaza de la Revolución Mariana Grajales, where the event will be held for the third time in the easternmost province of the country.

Headed by leader of the Cuban Revolution Fidel Castro, over 100 young people stormed the Carlos Manuel de Céspedes and Moncada garrisons on July 26, 1953, aiming at overthrowing Batista.(Prensa Latina)
