Cuba to Present Heberprot-P for Treating Diabetic Foot Infections

Santo Domingo, Nov 29. -The Cuban product Heberprot-P to treat patients with diabetic foot infections, registered in the Dominican Republic, will be presented on Tuesday by the Caribbean Pharmaceutical company at the Santo Domingo Hotel. The presentation also includes a master lecture by Doctor Victor Cabrera on recent alternatives in the treatment of patients with diabetic foot disease, in the presence of Cuban ambassador to Dominican Republic Alexis Bandrich and other officials.

Heberprot-P, developed by the Havana-based Center for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology in the mid 90s, is an injectable drug administrated by infiltration that speeds up the healing of deep, complex ulcers caused by diabetes.

A preliminary clinical study in 2001-2002 in 29 persons with type-II diabetis, some with ulcers of over 20 cm, showed that 58 percent of patients were able to save their extremities and the number of recurrences was outstandingly low.

Heberprot-P has been successfully applied in Cuba in more than 1,000 patients suffering from diabetic foot ulcers, and its use is part of the primary health attention in almost 500 policlinics of the country. (Prensa Latina)
