Cuban Athletes Triumph at Regional Triathlon ChampionshipHavana, June 20. -Cuban triathlete Maydelin Justo won the women's gold medal on Sunday in the 2011 Guatape Triathlon Junior Central American Championship, in Colombia, the Granma newspaper reported on Monday.

Justo, 27, achieved a personal best despite the high altitude of Guatape, almost 2,000 meters above sea level, and qualified for the Pan American Games in Guadalajara, Mexico, in October,

She finished a 1,500-meter swim, 40-kilometer cycling course, and 10-kilometer run in 2:17.06 hours, 25 seconds ahead of Colombian Carolina Grimaldo.

Justo also added 200 points, ranking her among the top 200 triathetes.

Last week she placed fifth in the 2011 Guatape Ibero-American Championship.

In the men's events, Cuban Michel Gonzalez finished with 1:58.52 hours, as runner-up to winner Colombian Carlos Javier Quinchara Forero (1:58.38), 23, who placed ninth a month ago in the 2011 Monterrey Triathlon World Cup, in Mexico.

Justo and Gonzalez were invited by the International Triathlon Union to participate in the 2011 Edmonton Triathlon World Cup, Canada, on July 10. (Prensa Latina)
