Buenos Aires: South American Defense Conference EndsBuenos Aires, May 27. -An international conference on the strategic position of South America in the 21st century ends Friday after two days of sessions at the headquarters of the Argentine Defense Ministry.

Defense ministers, other officials and academics of member countries of the Union of South American Nations (UNASUR) attended the event, called as part of the inauguration of the UNASUR Center for Strategic Defense Studies.

Speakers today include the defense ministers of Brazil, Nelson Jobim; Ecuador, Javier Ponce, and Uruguay, Luis Rosadilla.

At the opening yesterday, Argentine Defense Minister Arturo Puricelli said the organization is a source of regional strategic thinking, and that it would provide member countries with products and diagnoses to help adopt sustainable policies for their common interests.

The main purpose of the institution is to gain progress gradually in the analysis and discussion of common elements to build a joint vision regarding defense, he said. (Prensa Latina)
