Cuba to Honor Transplant PioneerHavana, Nov 22. -Cuban Society of History of Medicine awarded the rank of Honorary Member to the professor, doctor of science, Julio Noel Gonzalez Jimenez, a pioneer of transplantation in Cuba.

The recognition will be made next December 2, announced vice president of the society and director of the Center for Humanistic Studies of the University Of Medical Sciences Of Havana, Professor Maria del Carmen Amaro Cano.

Dr. Gonzalez began his medical studies at the University of Havana in 1947 and graduated in 1954.

For years he worked hard on various tasks and institutions, particularly in the field of cardiovascular surgery, and performed the first heart transplant in Cuba on December 9, 1985.

Noel Gonzalez is a member of the Academy of Sciences, was president of the ethics committee of science and president of the Cuban National Bioethics Committee, attached to the Academy until last year 2009, when for reasons of health was relieved in these responsibilities. (Prensa Latina)
