New Free the Cuban Five Committee in Paraguay

New Free the Cuban Five Committee in ParaguaySantani, Paraguay, Jul 17. -A new committee in solidarity with the five Cuban anti-terrorist fighters unfairly imprisoned in the United States was created in Santani, a district of the San Pedro department in northern Paraguay.

Along with the new coalition of political, social and rural organizations, activists also created the Santani Cuba Solidarity Coordinating Committee, with some 4,000 members.

With the creation of this committee, Paraguay now has five solidarity groups who defend the cause of Gerardo Hernandez, Rene Gonzalez, Ramon Labañino, Antonio Guerrero and Fernando Gonzalez, detained and arbitrarily tried by a court in Miami, Florida, in the United States.

Joel Filartega, president of the Paraguayan Cuba Solidarity Coordinating Committee, recounted the history of attacks perpetrated against Cuba by 10 U.S. administrations.

Ricardo Tur, minister-counselor of the Cuban embassy in this capital, said the struggle to release the Cuban Five, who are national heroes, has become internationally important, as friends in solidarity are increasingly joining in the demand for the US government to grant them freedom.

Tur said over 2,000 organizations of friendship and solidarity with Cuba have been created in 149 countries, including 554 "Free the Five" committees in 110 nations.

Leaders of the Guazu Front, the Tekojoja Party and People's Front also attended the activity. (Prensa Latina)
